Around Susquehanna County through the Seasons
Although the peak of leaf season seems to have passed, Susquehanna County has a beauty which lasts through all the seasons. Although the colours were somewhat subdued, the leaves stayed on a long time this year. In fact, there are still several vistas which offer a nice selection of colour. Although this ultimately leads to Winter, the Autumn is a great time in Susquehanna County. The various harvest dinners which are put on offer great value while exposing some people to real home cooking, maybe for the first time! Chicken and Biscuits, real mashed potatoes, some veggies, a slice or two of homemade sweet bread and a slab of pumpkin or apple pie. Are you hungry yet?
Most would agree that the Winter season can be absolutely beautiful as well, especially when the roads are quickly cleared after a snowfall. The skiing is great at Elk Mountain if you like downhill. If you like cross country, check out Callendars’s Farm just outside Thompson. They offer cross country skiing and maple syrup as well. Late Winter/Early Spring, also known as the Season of Mud for those who live on and travel on our dirt roads, is probably the least desirable time in our fine county. Fortunately, this generally only lasts a couple of weeks.
Then it’s on to Spring and the great renewal of green. Of course, when the ground temperature gets warm enough, the snow finally melts and the grass grows like crazy, meaning we have to mow at least once a week. Finally the flowers begin to bloom, the school busses stop running and we know Summer has arrived. This is also known to some as the Season of Construction, with the flagmen (and flagwomen) holding their combination Stop/Caution signs. We all hope this will be the year they finally repave “My Road”. Sometimes it actually happens too!
Summer is a wonderful time in Susquehanna County. The perenial favorites such as the Strawberry Festival at the Soldiers Orphans School in Harford Township along with at least one trip to Old Mill Village and Salt Springs State Park are made by many. The biggest attraction in the county for the residents is a stop at the local soft ice cream stand. There are many throughout the county and any warm evening will see a healthy line up for a favorite frozen treat. The Fourth of July is celebrated at vitually every community in Susquehanna County. Whether you go to the Fireman’s Picnic in Thompson, the parade in Montrose or the fireworks which seem to be everywhere, you will get the chance to experience the hospitality of a friendly country county. Oh yes, don’t forget the food. It’s always good. Also, there is the Apple Festival and the Blueberry Festival. Fridays are the Farmers’ Market in Montrose. A chance at really fresh produce and home baked goodies.
The third week of August is the time when the Harford Agricultural Society hold the Harford Fair. 2007 marked the 150th anniversary of the fair. Some big name entertainment was on hand to help the celebration. Of course, every year they have some quality entertainment. It is a real country fair (not a county fair mind you), including judging everything from the pie your mom entered to the craft your kid sister made in school to your photograph and a whole lot more. The 4-H livestock sale is always well attended with the members selling the animal they have raised. It’s a good time.
Then it’s back to school, the grass continues to grow, albeit a little slower, the nights get noticably cooler and the leaves slowly begin to change to their Autumn colours.
Susquehanna County, a wonderful place to live, raise a family and realize what we really have. Something that money will never buy.
